About the Candidate

Pete Buttigieg recently served as the mayor of South Bend, Indiana, first elected to the job at the infuriating age of 29. During his first term, he was deployed to Afghanistan as an intelligence officer in the U.S. Navy Reserve. Buttigieg is the first openly gay Democratic candidate, and also speaks Norwegian. Kul! Before becoming mayor, Buttigieg was a consultant at McKinsey and Company. Learn more about "Mayor Pete" below:

Q & A with Pete

  • What’s the reason you're running for president in six words?

Turn the page, move America forward.

  • What is the first piece of legislation you want to sign into law, and how will you get it through a GOP-led Senate if Democrats aren’t in charge?

The first piece of legislation I will sign is the pro-democracy, anti-corruption bill HR1 that has already passed the House. We have to repair our democracy so that we can accomplish our goals on every issue from immigration and climate to inequality and gun safety.

First of all, I'm going to do everything I can to make sure Mitch McConnell is no longer the leader of the US Senate. If he remains majority leader, I’ll take my case directly to the people because we have an American majority on our side on issue after issue. When a Republican Senator gets in the way of a widely popular, very important idea, I will use the power of the presidency to make sure their constituents know who is defying their will.

  • If elected, what is the first executive action you’ll take?

When I take office, I will immediately use the executive power of the presidency to rejoin the Paris Agreement and reinstate DACA while we work to pass comprehensive immigration reform.

  • What accomplishment are you most proud of?

My marriage to Chasten. It's given me the experience of caring about someone more than myself and is something that has moved me closer to god.

  • Do you have a pet? If not, are you ok?

We have two rescue pups, Buddy and Truman. The presence of our dogs who love us, and of course have no concept of politics, is the leveling force Chasten and I need after a few days on the trail.

  • When you’re not discussing all the reasons you will be a great president, what TV show are you insisting all of your friends watch immediately?

The Wire is probably the best TV show I’ve ever seen.

  • What job would you do if you weren’t a politician?

If I weren’t doing this, I could see myself being a long-haul truck driver. You get to travel across America, meet people, and have a lot of time to listen to podcasts!

  • If you could tell your 14-year-old self one thing, what would it be?

I would tell him that, despite how he feels right now, one day he’ll find belonging. He’ll be happily married, lead his hometown back from the brink, serve his country in uniform, and ask his fellow Americans to trust him to lead our nation at this crucial moment in our history.
