How to Organize in an Information Hellscape

Billionaires and bots are shaping the information Americans see every day. Here’s how VSA is organizing on offense.

Right now, someone you care about could be scrolling past a post of Trump promising a $5,000 check if Republicans win the midterms. Whether or not he can do it isn’t the point—the idea of getting a check in the mail in this economy is understandably tempting.

Imagine that same person shares that empty promise with five of their friends who aren’t paying attention to next month’s election. Sounds like a pretty good deal to them, right?

Just like that, five more people have a reason to vote to keep Republicans in control of Congress.

Multiply that by millions of feeds and group chats, and you start to see how far a single  person sharing one nugget of information can spread.

Over the last two years, we’ve watched Trump break down critical checks and balances, wreck the economy, and target our most vulnerable communities. But his power doesn’t grow only through executive orders and court battles. It grows one share at a time, as a steady flood of right-wing propaganda makes the unacceptable feel ordinary.

In 2024, hundreds of thousands of volunteers knocked doors, sent texts, and made calls. We worked harder than ever. And we still lost one of the most consequential elections of our lifetime.

That wasn’t for lack of effort. The landscape changed underneath us.

People see a stranger on their Ring camera and don’t open the door. iPhone filters bury political texts from numbers that aren’t in our contacts and flag political calls as spam. It’s harder than ever to get through to people.

So if we want to win, we have to find voters where they actually are and where persuasion actually happens: online and in trusted relationships.

That’s why Vote Save America has introduced social banking and relational organizing into our work this cycle.

We built these volunteer programs, but now we need the people to actually make them work. We have weeks, not months, until Election Day. The time to act is now.

And it couldn’t be easier for you to jump right in! In addition to weekly organizing calls with our team, Vote Save America has launched new self-guided organizing tools so you can start on your own right now. Visit our Action Hub and find everything you need to help us turn out voters and take back Congress, all on your own schedule.

We know texting your cousin about the Senate race and leaving a comment on a TikTok can feel trivial next to everything happening in this country, but it’s not.

Russian-backed bot networks and Trump-supportive billionaires are spending enormous amounts of money to shape what millions of Americans see every day.

But we have something they don’t: Real people who trust each other, which we believe is our most powerful organizing tool.

So pick a track. Grab a friend. And start today.
