Protecting Voting Rights in Michigan is a Team Sport
We’re excited to share this guest post from Mackenzie Walz, the Elections Director at Promote the Vote in Michigan! We all know how important Michigan is for retaking Congress this November. Promote the Vote is doing essential work to make sure voters across the state are informed and ready to cast their ballots.

Throughout college and law school, I was a poll worker with my grandma. Witnessing democracy in action brought me so much joy, but it also showed me how much time and effort election officials, poll workers, and volunteers put into running our elections. I learned protecting democracy takes all of us, and I wanted to keep doing that work. Now, as Election Protection Director for Promote the Vote, I work everyday to ensure all eligible Michiganders can exercise their fundamental right to vote.
At Promote the Vote, we are dedicated to removing barriers to voting—especially for historically disenfranchised communities—and safeguarding Michigan’s elections. Of course, we aren’t doing this work alone. We co-lead Michigan’s statewide nonpartisan Election Protection Program, resourcing a coalition of pro-voter organizations working to educate voters, fight for equitable access to the ballot, and protect our voting rights.
There have been and continue to be many attempts at both the state and federal levels to make it harder for people to register and vote. The good news is that most of these attempts have been unsuccessful. However, they have led to a lot of confusion among voters. We are all working especially hard this year to make sure that voters get the facts and know their rights.
Working in elections is hard. I’ve seen how political vilification and fear-mongering has impacted Michiganders’ turning out to vote. But I also continually witness the joy, community, and purpose that getting involved in protecting voting rights has brought to myself and everyone else who has joined this fight.
Promote the Vote offers several ways that you can get involved to help Michigan voters cast their ballot free from intimidation and interference. From monitoring polling locations to sharing facts about voting and elections, there is a way for everyone to get involved.
