The Supreme Court has overturned the constitutional protections of abortion rights in Roe v Wade. Here’s our plan to fight back.

Direct Abortion Support

While we may not know the extent of the real-world fallout for weeks to come, what we do know is that right now, you can help support efforts to provide financial, legal, and logistical assistance to pregnant people who cannot afford the cost of an abortion or do not have access to one where they live.

Fight Back at the Ballot Box

The conservative movement has spent decades building power at the local and state level to reach this very moment. A majority of Americans support a legal right to abortion, but we don’t see that overwhelming support reflected by our current elected officials. Building a progressive, pro-choice candidate pipeline, winning majorities in state houses, and confirming progressive judges will take time, but there's a lot we can do right now to protect abortion rights in the near term and realize the promise of our democracy in the long term.

In most of the Northeast, blue states can actually expand access to abortion, taking action like requiring health plans to cover abortion care or allowing nurse practitioners and physician assistants to perform abortions. There are also key races like in Pennsylvania, where the winner of the governor’s race will determine whether Pennsylvanians will eventually have their own abortion ban.

A post-Roe future in the South will be dire. Most states in this region have trigger laws in place, which means they have abortion bans or severe restrictions on the books that would immediately become enforceable without Roe vs Wade. It’s all the more important to fight back, especially when it comes to expanding reproductive freedom in states like North Carolina and Virginia, which will become havens for patients in nearby states.

The good news and the bad news about the post-Roe future in the Midwest is that there’s a patchwork of laws that will give us a fighting chance to protect access to abortion. In addition to protecting safe haven states like Illinois and Minnesota, the task in 2022 will be to expand access by fighting for control of the state legislature and governorships in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Kansas.

The post-Roe landscape in the West will be one of sharp divergence, with states like California, Nevada, and New Mexico expanding access and assisting patients from states like Wyoming, Idaho, and Utah in accessing abortion care. 2022 is crucial in Arizona, where a trigger ban currently on the books would become enforceable without Roe vs Wade. The state legislature and governor’s race are up for grabs and could determine the future of reproductive rights for Arizonans.
